Our Mission

Homegrown Totes is a project to create economic development and encourage the creative spirit in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. Each bag is produced by a home sewer in the beautiful and unique town of Saguache.

Every bag we make is one-of-a-kind, durable, and handmade with great care. Our fiber arts cottage industry produces eco-friendly tote bags using 100% recycled and salvaged materials. Our tote bags are practically designed with graceful, simple style. We use sturdy fabrics with modern-meets-traditional charm.

Our Funders

Homegrown Totes is generously supported by the Kenneth King Foundation, the Anschutz Family Foundation, Colorado Creative Industries and the Saguache County Commissioners.

Our Parent Organization

Homegrown Totes is a project of Saguache Works, a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. Saguache Works was formed in 2012 to further community revitalization efforts, stimulate economic development, promote healthy lifestyles and preserve traditional arts.

Our Designer

Penny Bruce is truly a master of her art. She joins Homegrown Totes with over forty years of experience as a production seamstress, making everything from camping and archery equipment to baby carriers and dresses. Her time working in factories left her resolute in the decision to create a fair and equitable marketplace for seamstresses where one is compensated fairly for skill and effort, and we are proud to build our industry on those ethics!

Our Town

Saguache is a small town in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. Our beautiful town has a lot to offer. Saguache is our county's seat, a historic ranching and mining community, and a thriving artists community. We have a diverse array of locally owned and operated businesses. Our newspaper, The Saguache Crescent, is the only remaining linotype printed weekly in the world. We are a certified Tree City USA, an oasis in the Valley known for the tallest Sand Dunes in North America. We are located 45 minutes drive from Alamosa and Salida.
